The Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site
Amid breath-taking countryside in the heart of rural Derbyshire lies The Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, originally inscribed by UNESCO in 2001.
The 15 mile site follows the River Derwent from Matlock Bath to Derby. It contains a fascinating series of historic mill complexes including some of the world’s first “modern” factories, along with the watercourses that powered them, the settlements built for the mill workers, and the remains of one of the world’s earliest railways all situated within a stunning landscape which has changed little over two centuries.
Visitors to The Derwent Valley can enjoy a range of country walks, shopping, art galleries, museums food and drink and abundant local hospitality.
